Bibbulmun near Dwellingup

So much for the end-to-end walk this year. Thanks to a broken rib in April and a broken foot in June, I didn't get much hiking done. So last weekend seemed like our last chance to get in a bit of walking before summer strikes big time, so we packed the car with three two-man tents, four teenagers and a truckload of food and headed down to Dwellingup for the weekend. With the daytime temperature around 30C, it wasn't too bad walking on the flat. The forest near the town is very pretty with lots of Zamias and bracken about. The tree trunks were very black due to a major bush fire nearly two years ago, but the vegetation seems to have recovered very quickly, as it does down south.

Apologies for the blurry spot in the middle. It's either sunscreen or insect repellent. Now I remember the other reason why bushwalking is not great in summer. The flies! Hundreds -- some nearly as big as blue wrens! That's why I'm not smiling. I was afraid one might get stuck between my teeth.

Even for this late in the season, there were still varieties of wildflowers about. Native orchids were the prettiest. Unfortunately my orchid photo is ruined by sunscreen, but these were the most common, with each flower about the size of my pinkie nail.

Day two we followed the Nanga brook along the Chuditch track.
