I'm just back from 2 hours of snow tubing with Julie, Kieran and Duncan at Titus Mountain l ski area, about a 7 minute drive from our house.
Julie wanted the boys to have some fun & we'd initially thought to take them to Lake Placid where the Olympic bobsled run is open to the public.
What they do is charge each person $75 for adults and $70 for teens for a 35 second 80mph downhill run with a professional driver & end guy. Also for the money you get a tee shirt and a photo of yourself going 80 mph on the Olympic run. This sounded really exciting, but the price was 10X what I thought (I'd misread the url site as $7.00 per).
So our second choice was the much more affordable, local, family oriented tubing adventure.
What a blast! 2 hours of sliding down one of two snow slides on a really hefty tube and being hauled back uphill by a tow rope. We got there early; by the time we left the parking lot was filled, the ski hills were filled, the lodge was filled, and those of us doing the tubing were grinning ear to ear.
I nearly lost my boots on one ride down the hill after trying to slow myself by dragging my feet. Another time my tube went flying over the snowy median separating the two runs & I became part of a trio of tubes...the other couple were very friendly.
Tiny kids were going down, racing one another. Whole families were having fun there & people were sharing & being really nice. Everyone was grinning like Cheshire cats.
Happy Boxing Day, by the way.
