I can completely empathise with how your husband is feeling. I go over this with my friends who have been through unemployment as well, there's a certain inevitable pain to it. You are expected to put your heart and soul into your job applications, and it often takes hours of your time, and you hear nothing back. While it's not personal, you can't help feeling like your time and effort has been wasted, and there's no respect given to it. You can't really help questioning whether you are doing something wrong, and of course you are the only thing you have any control over, so you take your frustration on yourself.
But all that said. Having been through it the first time when I left university and I had to move straight back with my parents, it does feel better when you have had a job. I find the job centre staff are a bit more respectful.
