"Zero, the truth is… I want to talk to you like we used to."

Her words echo in my ears and I resist the urge to fully face her. I can feel her emotions, tangled… searching… for anything to grab onto before she'd be swept away. The silence is deafening. She's not ready. She can't be a pureblood leader, not like this. Damn Kaname for leaving her in such a state. He should have at least warned her of… or perhaps he knew I'd be here. My teeth clench and I turn my head just enough to catch her sorrowful expression. Of course he did. And, the queen's white knight will be there to protect her from danger once more… while her damn king is off doing something else. Some king.

"You've gone crazy since you've abstained from blood for the first time in a long time." I snatch her wrist and start for the door before she even has time to register what I'm saying. "Come."

I drag her outside and into the trees. The sun has already dipped behind the blackening horizon. Smooth lavender, blushing pink, and cooling yellow paint the sky in a bizarre disharmony that somehow makes sense as we move further into the woods; I smell moisture in the air. Would it rain tonight? A definite possibility.

Suddenly, and none too gently, I throw her into a tree, its very foundation shaking. She's practically unharmed, but the look on her face reveals a much deeper pain. Time to wake up, princess. I keep my expression detached, cold. My eyes are stabbing into her own, an uncomfortable sensation that's written all over her face. She's far too easy to read, a product of Kaname's coddling. A vampire is not to be coddled, especially a pureblood. The bastard has given me the responsibility of forcing her eyes open. And, he's known all along that I'd do it; I'd do anything to protect her… whatever it took… to protect Yuuki.

I hold tightly to my left wrist. "This is for our coinciding interests."

Her eyes widen as I bring it to my lips, the sound of fangs stabbing flesh all encompassing. Bewilderment. Confusion. Hunger. Denial. Sorrow. Denial. Hunger. Guilt.

I present my wrist to her. "My blood. Drink it. If you keep acting like a coward, I'll crush your game of school this instant."

"I can't do it!" She shouts. "I've never wished for such a thing." Denial bathes her voice, choking it.

Yes, I know little Kuran princess… Wake up.

"Fine, I'll crush it then." I snarl. "I can't let someone with hunger written all over her face handle those guys!"

She looks about ready to fall apart, the evidence of tears glistening in her eyes. "Cherish yourself more!"

Her cheeks are too pink, the flush of her lips too deep. Her bloodlust is unnaturally strong even with the lack of her king's blood. She looks… almost sickly. A small place in my heart tightens. When she'd been human, things had been simpler. As a human, she hadn't been a prime target for others looking to take her place. As a vampire—a vampire princess—things are vastly different.

You knew better Kaname Kuran. You should not have left her like this, naïve and vulnerable like this… but then, you knew I'd be here, didn't you? Why would you leave her to me, to someone whose heart beats a love for her akin to yours? My senses abruptly focus on her fingers—shaky—as they curl around my wrist, the blood slowly staining her skin. Her eyes are clamped shut and her breaths are shallow bursts of heat against my open wound.

This is the path you've chosen, Yuuki. I never blamed you for hiding behind me as a human, using the excuse of being my only ally to satisfy your sense of worth. Now, you use Kaname. But, you are no longer a human. You are no longer innocent. You can no longer afford it. Innocence… can be fatal.

Her eyes open. There's something else in them now… something desperate. Before I realize it, her fingers are steel shackles around my wrist and shoulder, dragging me to her eager lips. I submit without question and her fangs pierce savagely, an impatient moan vibrating from her throat. I remain still as she suckles, careless and messy. Her hand creeps up my wrist, along my arm, past my shoulder and to my chest, gripping. The other soon follows.

Too thirsty… like some mindless level E. I keep my hands at my sides, fighting against the urge to cradle her. She doesn't need to be cradled… Not right now… not by me… She bites even deeper into my neck, her tongue licking the blood from my flesh… making me shiver. A question suddenly pops in my head and I almost smile despite the fact that a pureblood is tearing into my throat. What does my blood taste like? A question she'd asked me not too long ago… when the roles were reversed.

Out of the blue, she stiffens and recoils from me. I catch a flicker of shame in her red-tinted eyes as she quickly wipes the blood away, like some dirty little secret. "Too bad my blood wasn't Kaname's, huh?" My tone is emotionless.

She bites her lower lip and a single tear travels down her cheek. Don't brush it away… I take a step back.

"I'm sorry for… being so rough." Her voice would have been inaudible to human ears.

She's apologizing for more than that. No. It can't be like it was… ever again.

I wipe the evidence of her bite from my neck, most of it already tainting my collared shirt. "Though my love for you is unwavering, we are different and will remain so. You can no longer run from me and I will no longer chase you. The moves have changed, but the game is still the same. The knight must protect his queen… and her king."

Yuuki's chin trembles. "Zero…"

I turn and walk away. "Innocence is a sin. It's time to stop sinning, princess."
