Three things stood out this weekend. Here they are, in no particular order:
1. Across the Universe: Dreamy, psychedelic, passionate fluff. The music was fantastic, and most of it was recorded on-set. The whole thing was very spontaneous and refreshing. Just don't expect to get a message out of it that you haven't heard before; it was great, and the use of song was very nicely incorporated, but for as good as the movie was, it was also essentially a piece of fluff. Not that that's bad - just don't expect to be deeply moved.
2. New furniture! We got an enormous new sofa and chair (seriously, the chair is almost a love-seat), and a big storage ottoman. It's all in that new faux-suede stuff, tan colored, and cushy-but-firm. I love it all. Especially the arms - huge amounts of padding on top, but the sides are square so that they're easy to sit next to. But do you know what the best part is? I talked Big Lots into retroactively honoring a 20% off coupon that didn't take effect until the day after I bought it - which was enough to essentially make the ottoman free!
3. Suck it, Favre! Bears 27, Packers 20. A few friends were slated to stop by, but none made it, so we drank beer (mmmm, Delirium Tremems) and ate pizza alone. Last year, when I was still acclimating myself to being a Chicago sports fan,
bob_wonderllama explained to me that there is a dark side to loving the Bears: I must learn to hate, despise, and loathe the Green Bay Packers, and their nefarious leader, Brett Favre. I feel that my loathing has come a long way in the last year; I've grown as a person.
And that's the best of it! Oh, and one more final warning: avoid Anchor Porter. Burnt, thin, and simple. It's just awful beer, which is a shame since I've liked other Anchor Steam products and I enjoy supporting a quasi-traditional large-batch brewery. I'll hear out defenders, if anyone likes this swill - was it just that I had been drinking a pilsner beforehand?
