Chapter 1;
Our Salty tale opens aboard the "Merry Maiden" as the crew is ably manning the ship to put in at their final port of call.
Cassandra the cook inspires morale with her good cooking... and being the only woman aboard. Quick with a whack from a wooden spoon to any man that thinks to reach where his hands aren't requested.
Guillermo, a fine-looking man with a trustworthy face, the Navigator's Mate helps to plot a better course, looking to cut days off of their trip.
Ignatius the Powder Monkey causes quite a stir by blasting a hole in the side of the ship.
Phineas the Carpenter's Mate with his single-mindedness looks to repair the hole with an unmatched skill at wood-working and an unusual fondness for the ship's well-being.
Amari, Able seaman, a large dark-skinned ex-slave spends time in the rigging mizzening and battening things in need.
Drerig, flexing his superior muscles while clad in naught but short-cut sailor's pants helps raise the sail to catch the wind.
It is a calm moment before the shout of one turns into the shouts of many, "Dark Water off the Port Bow!" With-in moments the ship is pitching and rocking as the ocean itself seems determined to bring the ship to teh Deep Dweller's domain.
With much difficulty and effort the crew is able to break the ship free, but not without some damage to the ship and a delay of several days.
Arriving at the island of Dan Dee they unload goods and spend some time in a tavern celebrating their touch with death.
An odd man joins them at table and comments upon the "Kraken tattoo" upon Drerig's shoulder, noting he should head to the Lighthouse outside of town and see the Sola there.
Amari and Phineas seek a church of Brother Moon and in sharing their tales of escaping slavery and surviving the Dark Water attack are given food, drink and lodging for the night. Phineas constructs a model ship.
Ignatius makes a flashy display and attempts to sell some black powder, quickly being interrupted by some large men who take him to see a man named Al'haz who puts him to a test. Ignatius twice tries to blow the man up, but is tricked by a clever ruse and finds himself engaged in desire to learn the man's abilities.
Meanwhile, Drerig and Cassandra head to the lighthouse, escorted by Guillermo who then leaves them to visit the Navigator's Lodge. Guillermo has a short interview and is given a paper with some cryptic script upon it and told to deliver the paper to the Navigator's Lodge at whatever port he next makes berth.
Drerig ascends to the Brazier at the top of the Lighthouse to find an elderly woman singing the Rite of Dusk in worship of Father Sun. It is only moments later that a band of Pirates approach led by a giant of a man who is identified by Sola Alana as Pirate Lord Bloth. A confrontation ensues between the quick Cassandra and two men downstairs as the Sola tells Drerig simply, "Seek Alomar at the Abbey of Galdabar" and then notifies him of a secret passage at the base of the Lighthouse.
Cassandra struggles with one man and with an unwanted assisting blow from Drerig to one pirate and a command word from Sola Alana to the other they beat a hasty retreat.
Making their way down a narrow tunnel-way they emerge at a small opening cliff-face opening with 10 feet of sheer cliff above and 30 feet below. Drerig's attempt at diving is met with a spot of slippery seaweed and turns into a painful belly flop. Cassandra's attempt to scale the bluff results in her landing unconscious in the water beside Drerig. Thankfully his strength is enough to drag her and himself amidst a rain of enemy fire into a small inlet and under a rocky overhang to avoid notice.
A slight cold breeze helps him to discover a small cleft in the rock in which he is able to secret himself and the unconscious women inside. Strangely he meets some men who take him to a peculiar underground chapel to Father Sun. When seeing his tattoo and discovering his destination, they give aid, food and bedding, helping to awaken Cassandra and offer to provide a boat upon the morrow.
The next morning they provide a cloak for cover and Drerig and Cassandra return into town to recover their crew. All meet back at the tavern of the night before for a hurried breakfast as Phineas notes a man eying them suspiciously. Drerig recognizes one of the pirates from at the Lighthouse and again suggests that they run. A rushed chase through the market, down back alleys and across the open field to the bluff-line grotto reveals an old beat-up ship awaiting them. The men from the underground chapel fend off the pursuing pirates and the crew escapes, making their way quickly to Port Kalar at the southernmost end of the 6th Archipelago of Octopon.
Guillermo stops at the Navigator's Lodge and gives them the paper, and is given another in return with more cryptic scribblings. He is told to return to the lodge before he leaves.
Amari, not a fan of Father Sun hangs back in the town while the rest proceed to the Abbey. Once there, Drerig waits for the end of the Noontide Mass to meet privately with the Solar Priest. All the Solar adherents here have a strange blue mark across their eyes.
Ignatius goes shopping for raw materials to make black powder with.
Phineas awkwardly asks about witches and is directed to a woman who resides at the edge of a small lake. He asks her to teach him to be one with his ship. She takes him out in a boat and sails about under what seems to be magically summoned winds. She tells him to return under the new moon with three items; The rope of an anchor that has never been used, a piece of a sail that has never been cut and the head of a ship that has never set sail.
Back at the Abbey, Drerig meets with the Solar and finds arcane questions and obscure comments before mentioning that he seeks Alomar and is told by the Solar that he needs the sword of King Primus, whom the Priest claims is Drerig's father.
Giving him a small map and telling him to head to the village of Allthorp on the island of Allthorp to find the sword, he then offers up beds and food to Drerig and his company. Settling in for the night they all ponder ponderously about what the well at the center of the village of Allthorp may have to offer them the next day...
First day of the waning Moon of the month of Kroas in the 13th year since the fall of Octopon.
