I think nearly everyone...

missed the point of the epilogue. (Except for, of course, the very smart people I met this weekend.)

I've read all over the place that the epilogue sucked. Why? Because, apparently, it didn't give enough detail, it wasn't long enough, it wasn't a book. I mean seriously, the only way we were going to learn what Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Mr. & Mrs. Weasley, Percy, or any other character that happens to be the reader's favorite did for a living; how does George get on without Fred; how/when did Harry Ginny reuinte; who is the Headmaster of Hogwarts, how exactly was the school rebuilt, and who teaches which subject; what happened in the Wizarding World after the fall of Voldemort; who is the Minister of Magic, etc., etc. was to have the epilogue be 100, maybe even 1,000, pages.

The epilogue is what brought the series full-circle. Harry has finally seen his deepest desire fulfilled. He's got a family, and he belongs, and the world is peaceful. That's all we really need to know. Perhaps it seemed anti-climatic and possibly even poorly written after the chapters it preceded, which, quite frankly, contained some of the most beautiful writing I've ever read, but by no means does it suck because the reader still has questions. We all wanted more, but more would have diluted the poignancy of the ending.

deathly hallows, harry potter
