The Busy Baker

I love baking. I haven't been baking hardly anything lately because I've been trying to lose weight and trying to help hubby lose weight. Baking isn't exactly conducive to losing weight. Instead, I've been throwing all my energy into cooking. And don't get me wrong, I've found some great new recipes that we both like and are very healthy, but I don't get the same satisfaction from cooking as I do from baking. It's just not the same exact science that I crave.

I think its all the rich ingredients. I love the way the textures look when you mix them together... butter, sugar, eggs. I love the consistency of cookie dough... especially rolling it around on your tongue and feeling the grit of the sugar. Brownie batter is also quite pleasant.

Hubby is a bit of a hypochondriac... you know the type... nothing raw... has nightmares about salmonella. I've been eating cookie dough since I was old enough to put my own food in my mouth and I've never had a problem. AND I've got one of the most sensitive stomachs ever.

So anyway, I baked on Saturday and Sunday. I made a great cranberry orange bread with a Grand Marnier glaze... fab! And also I made these little cookies from the Martha Stewart website called "Lime Meltaways" ...basically a lime shortbread cookie with powdered sugar dusted over the top. Also made some great chocolate peanutbutter swirl brownies that Sister and I discovered last year.

I'm sad that so many women these days don't like to bake and get together for social situations. I miss making cookies with grandma every year and decorating them. It's the simple things in life that make it worth living. To me, making your own gifts and food brings so much more satisfaction than per say... locating a good restaurant. I'm lucky to have a sister who also likes to bake because none of my friends are "busy-bakers" like me.

If I had it all to do over again I'd go to school to be a baker/pastry chef.
