Torchwood 1x06

I know I'm a big old baby when it comes to most things, but that was a scary episode, wasn't it? But also, a whole lot of fun. *g*

It was sort of amusing to notice that I found the rural Welsh cannibals a lot less scary than that creepy creepy gas mask kid from Doctor Who (Notice how I can't even call him a creepy kid. He's so icky he needs two creepys to properly express my horror.) Actually, the cannibals were scarier when they were just unspecified mouth-breathers in the bushes. Once they were discovered to be insane farmers of the Welsh kind they lost a lot of the effect.

The scenery was pretty gorgeous (see: shiny new icon *points up*). I love the dark sky over the rugged land, it was wonderfully threatening. I liked the whole urban legend feeling about camping with monsters out in the woods. The group dynamics were a lot of fun -- embarrassing confessions by the campfire, only without the campfire. It's an incestuous bunch - our Torchwood boys and girls. *g* I liked the awkward moment over Lisa and Jack's reaction to it. He just looked poor Ianto in the eyes.

I have to confess that I'm starting to like Owen even despite myself. He's annoying but he certainly knows how to get reactions out of people. ;-) Gwen likes to push Owen around, doesn't she?

It seemed to be all fun and games until the disgusting carcasses started turning up everywhere. The buzzing of the flies and the uncontrollable vomiting was a good touch. But I always get a little pissed off when there's a psychotic killer/monster around and they start leaving people all by themselves. Not cool. And my reaction to Gwen being shot was shouting "HOLY SHIT, THEY SHOT HER! OMG, is she DYING?" My neighbours might think I'm a bit insane. *g* But I'm still more than a little annoyed that she got over the pain so fast. She was shot on the stomach! And five minutes after she's skipping on to more adventures with no more than a few winces and grunts in stead of lying somewhere whimpering.

Ianto is good at looking soulful and scared. They're certainly using that ability to the fullest. And they should tell us more about Toshiko. Other than the fact that she keeps cool in a crisis she's still a bit of a blank page to me. Give her more personality! The cannibals were so over the top that they kept dancing on the line between creepy (I need a new adjective, any suggestions?) and hysterically funny. More often than not they were funny. *g* And you could tell that policeman was crooked at first glance. I knew they couldn't trust him.

OK, confession time: I always get really bloodthirsty when I watch shows like this. It's actually kind of embarrassing. Otherwise I'm pretty much a pacifist but show me some sneaky cannibals and I start cheering the heroes on to insane and violent deeds. I'm all, Hit her on the head with a meat hook, Ianto! You can take her! or Torture him, Jack! No mercy! Be mean. and later on Shoot him Gwen! You've got him, what are you waiting for? Shoot the creepy bastard! And then afterwards I think that, oh, maybe it sort of was better that they didn't kill all the bad guys. That they actually put them in prison instead of all that mindless killing I was advocating just ten minutes ago.

It was fairly evident from the beginning that they were going to pair Gwen up with one of her team mates but Owen was a bit of a surprise. My moral side is going -- leave Rhys or stop cheating on him! -- and my thirst for dramatics wants her to keep going to Owen and being all grim and tortured about it while Owen's either smug or jealous. Or both.
