She found herself wishing she'd paid better attention to Ben's visions, to Justin's sermons, to the cards she'd always felt certain her mother was reading and not her. She wished she'd paid better attention to the firm thump of her own heart, calmer than it should have been in every situation. She was the One. She was the instrument of ultimate destruction. Not Justin, not Ben... She could be the end of all things. And she was not prepared.
Mullery didn't understand people who cheated. Witney and Shepherd didn't seem interested in each other. Shepherd wasn't single. It seemed obvious to him - you don't sleep with your boss's partner. You don't sleep with your partner's supervisor. It was strange to him, the personal offense he'd taken to what Witney had done. He'd been angry with her and angrier with Shepherd. As he stared down at his swollen knuckles, he realized that hitting the man had felt really good.
And he wondered why he was single when someone like Shepherd, a complete asshole like Shepherd, wasn't.
"When we have found all the mysteries and lost all the meaning, we will be alone, on an empty shore."
He regretted those words as he spoke them, even without knowing how true they would ultimately be. Their first dance was their last, and while he could keep searching for knowledge, keep trying to prove her theory, it was only her absence that could make solving her mysteries possible. In retrospect, he'd rather not solve the mysteries. They could have spent the rest of their lives together. Or he could have agreed to go to her room. Perhaps they would have been engulfed in flames together. He couldn't decide if that would have been worse than his actual fate.
Song: The Arbiter, from the musical Chess (I have no idea how to write a drabble for this song... CHALLENGE ACCEPTED, IPOD.) Fandom: Glee Word Count: 102
Jesse St. James does not understand this song. More than that, he doesn't understand this entire musical. He understands two things: the game of chess is boring and makes no sense, and the part of The Arbiter is not the lead. "Jesse St. James is not a featured performer. Jesse St. James is a star, even in a tiny regional theater. Jesse St. James should be playing the American." He refers to himself in the third person as he pleads his case, certain that if he wants the better part badly enough, he'll get it.
