He regretted those words as he spoke them, even without knowing how true they would ultimately be. Their first dance was their last, and while he could keep searching for knowledge, keep trying to prove her theory, it was only her absence that could make solving her mysteries possible. In retrospect, he'd rather not solve the mysteries. They could have spent the rest of their lives together. Or he could have agreed to go to her room. Perhaps they would have been engulfed in flames together. He couldn't decide if that would have been worse than his actual fate.
