Corroboration?
I think I may have figured out where the open armpit thing comes from.
Poking through my copy of PoF I've found several garments that appear to be open in the underarm. At least one doublet and one Spanish surcote. I think the might have been one or two others but I'd have to pour through it again. This appears to be primarily for outer garments or garments with split sleeves.
Tudor Tailor also has a kirtle with a detachable sleeve which points only at the top of the shoulder but I'm not sure where that is sourced from.
Though other then that one kirtle most of the "first outside layer" garments that I've seen so far have set in sleeves.
At least it's good to know I'm not completely making crap up (well, not unknowingly anyway).
