Is there such thing as Twitterholics Anonymous?

Lazy Sunday afternoons usually prompt me to do lazy things, like paint my nails (which I will do soon, since it's the last day of my 3-month break), eat a lot of chocolates, drink a lot of green tea and usually finish reading a book. But due to my sudden inexplicable drive to post an update, I'm here, sitting at my laptop instead of lolling about in bed. Yes, I loll about in bed most Sunday afternoons. I'm an incurable loller.

I have a confession to make. I am a Twitter-addict (if you follow me on Twitter, you probably know this already). A friend of mine made up a word to describe me; I'm a Tweetict. I've always known I'm one but I never realised to what extent my addiction is until the application I use for my phone got suspended by the Twitter gods. For a moment, I actually mourned the loss of ÜberTwitter because few other applications for the Blackberry actually supports photo uploads to Plixi and I do post quite a lot of pictures. The official application doesn't compare to ÜberTwitter in terms of functionality at all. Then, just as I was about to wear black, there came the news that they're renaming the application to ÜberSocial! I saw the light of dawn and gone were my plans to wear black.

After attempting the entire day to install the newly-named (but virtually still the same thing) application, I finally succeeded but it refuses to work. Bugger. And until now, it's not working. Bad Twitter. Bad, bad Twitter.

Anyway, the point of this post is to illustrate what is my life coming to if I need this little - or not so little - social network with the little bluebird to keep me happy. This cannot possible be healthy. But there are so many good things about it that I cannot imagine a better life without this little bird.

Here are the TOP 5 reasons I'm a Tweedict:

1. Many people I interact with a lot use Twitter.

2. Many people on Facebook post statuses which just irritate the hell out of me. Eg. "My mother said no to the iPhone. She's such a bitch! FML." and these are people I know in real life so it would be incredibly awkward to unfriend. I tend to not go on it much so where else can I go to keep up to date about people? Twitter! I keep up with everyone easily and when I see someone the next day; I can say; "Oh my gods, where did you get that gorgeous pair of shoes?!" because they'd posted the picture. I like to know what's going on with the lives of the people I care about - yes, including their new shoes.

3.The DM feature is a substitute for text messaging so I don't have to spend money since I'm using an unlimited data plan.

4. News spreads so fast there that I barely need to pick up the newspaper to know what's going on in the world - and I won't get smelly, inky fingers flipping the pages! (People like me are probably contributing to the death of traditional print newspapers.)

5. It's easy to broadcast a message I need many people to see; comes in incredibly handy during the stressful moments of meeting assignment deadlines. "PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR RESEARCH MATERIAL TOMORROW EVERYONE," works faster than individually texting all of them. And those heart-attack inducing moments. It usually goes like this. Someone tweets; "Finally. Reached 2000 words." And some poor bloke would tweet back; "ZOMG WTF I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY 1000 WORDS."

There are cons to Twitter too, of course, but I think the pros outweigh them. I definitely prefer it to Facebook. :)
