Chilli con carne

Elsewhere on LiveJournal, someone was talking about chilli1 con carne. I remembered a tomato-less recipe that sillytrippy had given me a while back: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cookbook:Jailhouse_Chili

For some reason, I still had chilli stuck in my head, and looked on Wikipedia. I'd never heard of chilli queens, who served chilli on street corners in the same way that we have hot-dog stalls or roast chestnuts. But they were closed down: In September 1937, the San Antonio Health Department implemented new sanitary regulations that required the chili queens to adhere to the same standards as indoor restaurants. Unable to provide lavatory facilities, the queens and their "street chili" culture disappeared overnight.

Thinking about this, I think it would probably be more unsanitory if they actually could provide lavatory facilities at a street-corner, uh, stall.

I wonder if street-corner chilli could ever catch on in Britain.
