A/N: So this isnt great, it's really just setting the scene for the next update. Please read this as I promise the next update is a lot better!

She had known telling Richard would be problematic but she knew she had done the right thing- if only Richard could except that.

The whole conversation had gone the way she thought it would; she had broken the news clutching Cara's hand tightly for reassurance. She had expected initial disgust with eventual acceptance from Zedd and rage from Richard.

Instead she had barely gotten the words out when Zedd had broken into a huge grin, clapping her on the back, telling her he was glad she had finally seen sense and got with Cara.
Kahlan had been shocked but when she turned to Cara, expecting a mirrored expression, she was met by a decidedly smug expression. She smiled now remembering Cara's proclamation:
"Surely you see Kahlan, that for once even the wizard has stopped thinking about food long enough to see the obvious; we belong together!"
Cara then sealed the declaration with a chaste kiss on the lips. Touched by Zedd's easy acceptance and Cara's unusual display of public affection, Kahlan was just about ready to grab Cara and take her beloved upstairs when she remembered Richard.

He was sitting in stoic silence, his brow furrowed up in thought.  Her Cara once again seemed to anticipate her mood, leaning over and reclaiming her hand. Spurred on by Cara, Kahlan tentively began to find out Richards take on her relationship.

"Richard? Are you okay with all of this?"

Richard glanced up at her, a look of puzzlement on his face. "You love Cara?"
Kahlan couldn't help the warm glow that filled her at the sound of those words; it must have shown on her face for Richard's face darkened. "Yes, I love her, more than anything."

"But Kahlan don't you see, you can't. Cara is a woman and you love me! Remember all we've been through, you and I are meant to be!" As he spoke a look of certainty stole over his features as his voice grew with conviction. "This is just a faze, I know I haven't been able to devote much time to you since I started to reclaim the D'Haran throne as my own. But I promise I'll try harder, this silly game can stop now, you shouldn't tease us all in this way!"
As Richard spoke, Kahlan could feel Cara tense, as she too was suffused with rage. How could he sit there belittling her relationship with Cara, he knew nothing, nothing, of love. Yet she forced herself to calm, she had to remember this was hard in Richard, he clearly still cared for her.
With an admonishing glance to Cara to stop them doing something she would regret, Kahlan turned to the Seeker.

"Richard, I still care for you, but what was between us, wasn't really love, I know that now. You can say and believe what you wish, but never doubt that!"

Richard took on a kind patient look and answered her in a calm, patronising manner. He reminded Kahlan of a parent humouring a child with an overactive imagination. "Yes Kahlan, of course, but don't you think it's time to face facts, you can be with Cara no more than you can with me."
Patience be dammed, Kahlan had had enough, but before she could open her mouth to give him what for, Cara spoke.

Her voice dripped with disdain as it became clear it was only the Rahl bond they shared which was stopping her from familiarising him with her agiel.
"Lord Rahl," she drawled out, " Kahlan loves me and I love her and we have already made love...many times, something you have never done. Our love protects me from confession, it does not protect you!"

Richard face steadily grew redder, his palms tightening into  fists, yet his voice came out steady. "If I really am your Lord Rahl then obey me in this and stop this folly with Kahlan!"
Cara looked him dead in the eye replied in a voice devoid of the emotions raging in her eyes. "I would rather renounce my agiel than Kahlan."

A rush of warmth suffused Kahlan, joy that Cara truly valued her so, but there was a twinge of sadness that she had come between Cara and her lord. She squeezed Cara's hand, hoping that would convey the irrevocable, unstoppable love she felt for her Mord Sith. Cara smiled at her as Richard jumped up, apoplectic with rage. "This is wrong, we belong together Kahlan, you'll see!!"

So saying this he stormed off to the room they had rented for him. Zedd looked at them awkwardly before rushing after Richard.
She let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding and turned to Cara. "Well, I suppose that could have gone worse...," she trailed off as Cara silenced her with a kiss.
"Shhh my love, we are together and Lord Rahl will calm down, for the first time since...before, I am completely at peace with myself," as she confided in Kahlan her eyes began to roam over Kahlan's face and chest.  "But maybe you need more convincing, I certainly wouldn't mind working at it.."
Kahlan caught the twinkle in her eyes and answered her with a nod, unable to stop her pounding in anticipation. Cara grinned and jumped up. "Wait here, I just want to...prepare everything." Before she
rushed off upstairs.

Kahlan slumped back into the bench, looking around the tavern.

Everything was out in the open now, she and Cara were together. Kahlan decided that telling the truth might just be the first step to making dreams a reality.
