I can't sleep because right now I'm at my creative peak, and so many ideas are flowing in my head I must capture as many as I can. I've assigned myself to write a paper on this topic, but I want to get some opinions

Last night I was thinking more along the lines of whether the average American needs to define himself as either a Republican or Democrat. I know obviously that we could never get rid of political parties, and they are necessary, but I guess I was looking more along the lines of them as the political machines; that they're necessary at the government level so people can form coalitions and work together and know that this party stands for A while another party stands for B.
This just causes me to think about how similar the parties are on the moderate side: moderate republicans=conservative democrats. In my head it would seem more efficient to create a new party of moderation with all the extremes and they work with the moderates to hammer out the issues. Which is where PACs come in, I guess.
In respect to political education, I guess I was thinking more along the lines of someone knows what they believe, and these seem like the least likely to change thier beliefs but American has grown so large that instead of two groups, we need more groups to represent these people who know what they believe and aren't going to change that belief.
Maybe the point I'm trying to get to is when you contribute money to say Republicans, maybe you only want to contribute to the conservative republicans, or you just want to earmark where your money is going. And once again, I guess this is where PACs come in. To me it seems like the two-party system is just a front for this intricate system that has no officiality but is there.
