Just back from an encore screening of Frankenstein, having found that this year another, better, venue has started to host the NT Live events in my area. Had muddled the casting in my mind, thus was quite surprised when JLM emerged as Creature, but then was really pleased to see him in that role again - especially as that meant seeing BC looking all handsome as Victor. ;-)
I hadn't seen the film of this casting before, and was slightly disappointed that the play began when the birthing contraption had already stopped revolving. I'm sure in the other version we hear the bell and see the pod rotating around the stage. I'm also sure some parts were cut. I could be wrong. Whatever. I like Jonny as the Creature. I feel more sympathetic towards the Creature with him in the role than I do Benedict - perhaps because made-up Jonny just doesn't appear so monstrous, being shorter ergo less threatening, and playing the role in a generally gentler and simpler manner.
Anyway despite feelings of over indulgence, I will return next Thursday evening to see the alternate version. I want to ensure that this theatre thinks it worthwhile continuing to support NT Live. I'm pleased to say that the comfortable auditorium was well filled this evening. I'll definitely be helping to make up the numbers there as often as I can. :-)
