At Last!

I was very excited to find - posted on You Tube since I’d looked last year - The Merry Widow operetta by Franz Lehar starring amongst others, Jeremy Brett as Count Danilo. It’s a major role. He sings. He dances. He’s on stage most of the time, and has many solo moments, not to mention duets and ensemble pieces. He looks and sounds rather fabulous, and is a credible singing actor. The entire operetta is there in twelve parts starting here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbGdK5m285k

Okay so the quality is naturally pretty ropey - this was on TV in 1968 - but it’s more than good enough to appreciate as an otherwise lost gem. Skip to JB’s grand entrance and first solo starting at 5.20 in part two:

Oo-er...

More highlights... part 4 from 7.30, part 6 from around 3.00, and JB singing with the boys from the start of part 7 here:

All of part 7 is good, part 8 foreshadows the famous duet waltz finale, part 9 from around 8.28, part 10 from about 1.40, final duet in part 11 at 4.58 with consummating snog at 7.50. tiny part 12 to finish. :-)

I’m finding this awesome and hilarious in about equal measures. LOL!
