Geographical Conundrums 55!

May 12, 2017 07:04

We recently talked about which state borders we'd been across, followed by a GC! about maritime state borders.

Today, let's talk about the river borders of states! There are about 60 rivers that form all or part of a state border. Let's focus on those that are part of at least three state borders (or two state borders and an international border).

(The question: mixed difficulty. Additional hints at bottom.) Name the rivers that form all or part of the borders of:
10 states:
a. Source: 47°14' MN,WI,IA,IL,MO,KY,TN,AR,LA,?? (for each river, the list of state borders is in white)

5 states: (where there's more than one river, they're listed from northernmost source to southernmost source)
b. Source: 44°32', SD,NE,IA,KA,??
c. Source: 41°52', IL,IN,KY,WV,??

4 states:
d. Source: 42°27', NY,PA,NJ,??
e. Source: 35°57', KY,MS,AL,??

3 states + 1 international border:
f. Source: 40°28', AZ,NV,CA,Mexico

3 states:
g. Source: 45°51', 41 miles long SD,MN,ND
h. Source: 39°11', MD,VA,WV (and DC)
i. Source: 37°16', 159 miles long KY,WV,VA
j. Source: 34°34', TX,OK,AR

2 states + 1 international border:
k. Source: 37°47', NM,TX,Mexico

Additional Hint #1: Five of the rivers take their name from a state which they border; in the list of states following each river, the namesake state has been replaced with a ??.
Additional Hint #2: b. and c. are tributaries of a. e. is a tributary of c. i. is also a tributary of c., albeit via an intermediary river. j. used to be a tributary of a. (and is still often listed as one), but now contributes to a distributary of a.
Additional Hint #3: Answer g. is probably the most obscure. The river is only 41 miles long, and part of its name comes from the most prominent Native American tribal group of its region.
Additional Hint #4: Answer i. is quite obscure as well. The river is only 159 miles long, and runs through the backwoods country where the Hatfield and McCoy clans feuded.
