The quest for the treasure has heated up, and in doing so it has frightened me into not having posted for the past two weeks. It is nearly safe to reveal the events of my last two days in Atlanta and the remarkable clue that amazingly and coincidentally led me right back to Santa Barbara! Oh no, I hate the feeling of being stiffed by those people you thought would help you out with rec. letters! I feel your pain. I know it'll all work out, though. Be kind but be persistent...I had to bother one of my people a bit, but she came through in the end. Make sure they know that they're your only hope, that they're the solitary thing standing between you and your dreams. Grovel a bit...pride is for ninnies, eh?

The situation is a little more delicate than that. He doesn't live in the US, and I don't know him very well, so the only thing that really would give him reason to write me a letter is the body of my work, which is rather small. It was something of a long shot in the first place, and now it's looking much longer. I should have listened to my advisor and published much sooner; this is the long-term price of procrastination. Oh well, things will work out one way or another :)

Thank you. I sincerely appreciate the offer. The only downside is that the jobs for which I'm applying essentially expect letters from math professors, and preferrably from well-established ones. Fortunately on Friday one of the people in the math department agreed to write a research letter for me, so things look better. I'm still putting things together, but I'm breathing more easily doing so.

Who says I have to put my name on it? You pick the well-established math professor, I'll pen the letter.

Okay, haven't seen any new posts with complaints about unwritten letters of rec. That means you got it all under control? Hope so. I'm crossing my fingers that the powers that be cut you a little slack and came through after all.
