June 13th - Day One

Jun 13, 2005 13:19

So I'm sitting here at work bored. Never mind that this is day one of seven in a row, but I've decided to be productive (besides reading about the Fourth Crusade).

Scratch that.

Instead I'll talk about our trip this weekend that was a whole lot of fun. shrimpfliedlice, monstrumkiwiest, sillybuug, Karl (who refuses to get an el jay account), and I went up to Baldwin, Michigan to Chris's family's cabin on the Pere Marquette River. It was a blast. Traffic was absolutely horrible getting there, as it took me as much time to leave Bay City as it did to drive to Clare where I met the others coming from Lansing (my trip wasn't nearly as long as theirs was). On a side note, the 97.6 degree weather and my car did not get along very well, so I had a choice between driving 55 and having air conditioning and driving 75-80 without it, I chose speed. I ran into a giant rainstorm just before Sanford Lake, which poured so much that I almost had to stop the car on the expressway. Then, I drove out of the rain about a mile later. It didn't taper off, it just stopped. There was a line with rain on one side, and no rain on the other. It was rather interesting. On Friday, once we got there, we unpacked and decided to take a swim in the river, since it was 90+ degrees outside. Karl jumped in first and didn't make any sort of yelping noises, so I jumped in. Then I realized that he was trying to be funny since the water was ABSOLUTELY FREEZING. Well I immediately exclaimed "Geez that's cold!" and tipped off Kiwi and Analisa, and Karl was mad. Serves him right. Chris had gone inside to get some chips, so when he jumped in he was as shocked as I was at how cold the water was. So that was that, we explored the river, got out, ate nachos, and played cards until a few hours after midnight. One interesting characteristic about the house was that it had many clocks, but because the power is turned off after each use, none of them had the correct time. Saturday we went kayaking in the river, on about a three and a half hour trip. It was extremely fun. Analisa tipped over more times than I can count, and I laughed so hard when she tipped the first time I couldn't breathe. Chris tipped over while trying to get back into his boat after helping Analisa. Karl tipped over while trying to tip me over... he was so intent on running into my boat that he didn't see the giant limb overhanging the river that overturned his kayak. Very fun.

There were lots of people on the river in canoes, kayaks, and rafts, most of which were drunk. Some memorable quotes:

Woman Flopping Around In Water: "Hi, we're sober!"

Guy Flopping Around In Water: "Anyone got a cigarette?"
Chris: "No, they would be pretty wet" (paraphrase)
Guy Flopping Around In Water: "Smoking's coooooooooooooool!"

I got pretty burned on the trip, but it's my own fault for not wearing more sunscreen. It looks like I am wearing a wifebeater while I'm shirtless, but usually the burn turns to golden brown in a couple of days. Saturday night we played Monopoly, which I lost most spectacularly. I did win the Cribbage game though, skunking Karl. Ha. I was so tired on Saturday night that I fell asleep with my shoes on. Sunday we cleaned up, went to Dairy Queen, and drove back. It was a great time, and I would love to go there again.

Since Chris organized this trip, I guess it is my turn to organize the next one! Anyone want to go to Cedar Point or Michigan's Adventure? Let me know, and I'll start setting something up! Everyone's welcome!
