My staffing agency called last night to inform me that I've been officially laid off. This time, I'm not sure who to blame... myself, or the economy. Or, maybe both.
We (that is, our temp group) knew something was up as of about a month and a half ago. About mid-November, things started getting REALLY slow. On average, we spent only about 2 1/2 hours of our 8-hour work day doing actual work. The rest of it? Keeping our eyes peeled for work.
Yesterday, our HR Director starts pulling temps aside and asking them if they would like to be relocated to other departments. At first we took this as a good sign, meaning they would prefer to use who they already have, rather than hire new people. They told us they understood that work has been scant, and would like to start relocating people right away. However, there was a lot of us, and some obviously had better luck being relocated to other suites than others.
I was one of those unfortunate ones.
Thankfully, I guess it could have ended a lot worse. I could have been fired for making too many mistakes, or even for low production quota (since that IS a valid reason). However, the HR lady did say that we weren't being let go because of poor performance; she even acknowledged that the fact that we had been there nearly four months was an indicator that we were doing pretty well. There was just not enough work available, and too many temps to divide it up between.
Also, the girl at the staffing agency who FOUND me that job told me the same; that I had been working very hard, would definitely recommend me to other companies, and would do everything within her power to find me another position as soon as possible.
Until then, I'm back to pounding the pavement.
Again.
