A post for my North American readers --
I have a deep dark dirty secret. I am in this... sort of a cult, you see; and we need capable recruits.
I like Pro Football.
rob_allan is organizing another Fantasy Football League this fall. That means a free online system (hosted on Yahoo.com) for making up your own teams of players from the American pro-football league, a.k.a. the NFL, a.k.a. the game no one outside of North America gives a damn about. You get to trade, hire and fire players, shuffle them around from week to week, pore over real game statistics to maximize the points you hope to get in each game, customize stuff like your team name, make up mottoes and cheers, make ridiculous posts about your football prowess, taunt and gloat people you have beaten, beg for mercy if you really suck, etc. (If this made no sense or doesn't sound like any fun, you probably don't want to read any further).
Last year, by some miraculous fluke, I ended up winning our pool -- I know everything there is to know about the game from
phoenix14159 (who, btw., declines to play because it would mean she'd have an emotional investment in specific players and might possibly end up in a conflict about who to cheer for, which would detract from her Sunday enjoyment of cheering for her favourite teams... which makes sense), so a great measure of credit goes to her. It was a close shave -- we had to rely on a tiebreaker, since I tied the final score with Rob. I was helped by the fact the pool was small and relatively inexperienced *cough
littleminxcough*. This year should be a lot more competitive. In order to maximize the challenge and fun, I would like to ask if any of my readers are NFL fans and would also like to join?
Like I said, there's no financial cost. If you can afford it, you can pay extra to have some special statistical breakdowns done for you by Yahoo, but last year we all played 100% free. You need to invest some time up-front for the initial player draft, but after that you can ignore your team completely for the rest of the season if you wish. All you really need is some interest in football and a positive attitude. It's all very laid back, kink-positive, fun-oriented and silly. Which doesn't mean you can't be a cut-throat bloodthirsty competitor!
