Opposite sex date REQUIRED

So winter break is only a few days away! University is done, but the HS I work at has 3 more days. They seem like worthless days to me, since the kids don't really do anything in many classes (the history teacher was showing "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and the Chem teacher showed more episodes of "CSI"), but as they all say, the days count towards 180.

Yesterday was the Christmas dance, and in this school, it is a HUGE deal. They held it at the Fez, or the Rex, or some other place with a three letter name with an e in the middle, in Pittsburgh. The students are REQUIRED to have a date. They are not allowed to go stag at all. They are not allowed to go with a group of friends. They MUST have a date. Now, WHAT IN THE HELL ARE WE TEACHING THESE KIDS IF THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DANCE IF THEY DON'T HAVE A DATE???? I highly disagree with that aspect of the dance. What's worse is that a certain teacher I know had the students working on an important assignment, heard an announcement about the dance, and then interrupted the students' work to see who was going. She then proceeded to tell the students that she was going to come around to them individually, and they were to tell her either "I'm not going," or "I'm going with [fill in name here]." AHHHAHHH!!!! Who does that!??!?!?

What's worse about the dance is this: students who go to the dance were allowed to get out of school at 10:45am yesterday. AND we had a 2-hour delay, which means those students were only in school for a little over an hour. Now why in the world do they need to get out of school for a stupid dance? Ok, it is a function designed to be fun, but it's become so flawed that I can't describe it in any other way! Again, what are we teaching our students with this ridiculous behaviour from parents, teachers, and administrators?!?!?!?!?!? So that completely messed up the majority of classes, making them chat rooms or movie theaters, and the librarian complained because some teachers just sent their students over to her every period! What a ridiculous state of affairs! The students who remained know it's completely unfair to allow the dance kids to get out but not anyone else. What horrid, nasty, stupid discrimination. I understand letting kids out early for competitions and select music, sports, or academic teams, but letting them out early to go primp for a holiday dance to which same sex partners have been banned and you MUST bring an opposite sex date is just ludicrous. No wonder these girls grow up to depend on their men. They are taught in school that a man is required in order to have fun.

On a good note about the school, I just got my first paycheck for subbing at the school. $80/day for doing more of what I normally do--kick butt!
