Humph, stuff

I went to a sorority formal on Friday. It was DZ, delta zeta, I think. Anyway, we went to the European Crystal out in what is probably best termed the middle of nowhere. I guess it's a nice place for a Friday night, but honestly, the fact that there was a break repair store kinda-sorta degraded from the whole idea of being a classy place.

But I'm not going to hate, as I'm certainly (as I found out later that night) in no position to pontificate about classiness.

Observe: After the soup and the salad (and after I ate about a bread bowls worth of these disguisting rolls, leaving crumbs scattered about) they brought out little raised shot glasses with raspberry sorbet. Now I had left to go to the bathroom between the salad and the main course, and when I returned I was duly presented with this smidgen of sorbet.

"Was I in the bathroom for that long?" quiered I.

"No, this is the palate cleanser"

"Oh of course. The Plate Cleanser. I thought Mr. Clean dish soap did that well enough, didn't know sorbet worked as well. Sounds like a midwives tale to me".

"humpf"

Anyway, so that was an experience.

The dancing afterwards was very high school - they played the clean versions of songs and there was a set of two "slow" songs where everyone came close and swayed to the beat. I guess this is what I was missing out in High school...

But I don't want to hate - it was actually a really fun time.

Particularly when my date and her friend attempted to crash the open bar at the wedding next door and were promptly kicked out by the bride.

I talked with some of the guys outside who were from the wedding and there was this really old guy who was drunk off his ass. He greeted me by telling me that the people taking the buses "were fucked". Why? "They're rigged to explode. KABOOM (he spilled a bit of his drink on himself as he made the appropriate exploding hand gesture)". His younger friend interjected and told me that he "spent too much of his time defusing landmines".

It was at this point that I told myself that 1.) I wasn't drunk enough and 2.) I should probably go back to my gathering.

Anyway pictures from the night...

Now I can guess what you are thinking - but I'd like to mention that she asked me and not vice-versa. I had met her once before and in standard D.C. fashion I didn't really make an effort to be her friend. I have no predilection for people...I just need them to be cool, and by that I mean cool by my defintion.

And now the boring part -

I'm writing a paper on the demise of the Aztecs, and I'm more or less taking the position that they are more or less at fault for their destruction. Yeah, it's true that the Spaniards had guns and stuff, but still - there were 2 MILLION natives in the Mexican valley - do you really think 700 Spaniards could have fought off 2 MILLION angry people? No...

So I think it's fascinating. And actually partially to blame for me wearing jeans to the formal above - I didn't have time to really change before heading out to the formal. I spoke with my professor for a good 2 hours about this topic. This is why I love history. :)

Going home Nov. 23rd. See anyone back there!
