Title: Birthday Surprises
Fandom: Durarara!!
Characters: Shizuo, Psyche, Tsugaru, Izaya and co.
Prompt: Sunglasses

Shizuo was cleaning up the dishes used to make breakfast for the kids before he could sit down at an empty spot at the table and eat his own. He hadn’t been much of a cook before the kids had come around, and he wouldn’t consider himself much of one now, but he’d had to learn to make sure the kids ate in the morning. Besides, pancakes and waffles were easy enough to make once you got them down the first time. He had just finished wiping the last pan when he felt a tug on his pant leg. Looking down he noticed that Psyche had left his seat at the table and was now looking up at his father expectantly.

“What is it, Psyche?” Shizuo asked, pretty sure he had taken care of all of the children’s breakfast needs before settling in to clean. The raven didn’t say anything at first, waving a hand and motioning for Shizuo to come down to him. The blonde blinked, before dutifully crouching down so the boy could reach his ear.

“I know what I want to get Tsu-chan for his birthday,” the boy cupped his hand over and whispered into his father’s ear. The second oldest of their children would be turning eleven tomorrow and he knew Izaya probably had something planned already for their gift to the blonde child. But he knew that despite the age difference Tsugaru and Psyche were almost inseparable, and he should have figured that the boy would want to do something for him that was different.

“Oh really? And what would that be?” Shizuo asked him in a low voice, eyes alight with amusement.

“He wants sunglasses like Daddy’s!” the boy whispered excitedly, very careful to make sure even his mouth was covered. His pink eyes shown with excitement at the prospect of a secret gift, however, and he still hadn’t moved away. “I was hoping Daddy could help me get them for Tsu-chan?” The eyes had turned pleading now as he looked up at his father. Shizuo sighed, finding his heart give way, unable to refuse his son that request.

“I’ll have to talk to Iza-chan,” he said, still mentally chuckling at the name the children had given Izaya. “If he can stay with the others, I’ll take you, okay?” The boy nodded vigorously, beaming a million dollar smile at his father in the process.

“Thank you, Daddy!” he cried, hugging with a force that would have knocked his father from his crouch if he hadn’t been the fortissimo of Ikebukuro. The man chuckled in response, patting that raven head lightly in response.

“Now go eat your breakfast,” he urged, “Before it gets cold or one of your brothers eats it.” The boy scampered off, and Shizuo put the remaining pan away before he turned around to face the table of eating children. His breakfast was going to have to wait.

“I’ll be right back, okay? Don’t set anything on fire, got it?” he directed at the kids before walking out of the room and whipping out his cell phone. He dialed Izaya’s without a second’s hesitance and than waited for the other to pick up his phone. As much as hated it when Shizuo called him during work, after incidences with both Tsugaru and Delic the raven hardly ignored his phone calls anymore.

“Shizu-chan, you know I’m awfully busy when I’m at work. Is one of the children bleeding or injured again?” Izaya’s voice came through the phone, sounding a measure annoyed but almost more exhausted. Shizuo wasn’t normally too good at reading people, but he’d always seemed to be in tune with the flea.

“No. I just need to know if you can come home and watch the kids for a bit today,” Shizuo responded gruffly, already sensing how little fun this conversation was going to be.

“I have a lot of work to do today Shizu-chan. I thought that was why you were staying home with them today. You don’t have to work with Tom-san until tomorrow.”

“It will only be for a little bit. You can go back to work afterwards, can’t you?”

“What is so important that I must come home? You’re not going to go meet someone are you?”

“No!” Shizuo growled in response, anger starting to rise, he clenched his empty fist to refrain from shattering the phone or raising his voice so that the kids could hear the phone call.

“Then what is it, Shizu-chan?” the raven was still impeccably calm, which only served to annoy Shizuo more.

“Psyche wants me to take him shopping for Tsugaru’s birthday present.”

“I should have expected it,” he chuckled. “Psyche’s quite attached to his older brother. I can pick it up on the way home, if you tell me what it is he wants to get Tsugaru.”

“You’re missing the point, Izaya,” Shizuo responded flatly, voice still inflected with annoyance. “Psyche wants to go pick the present out for him. I told him that I would take him.”

“Fine,” Izaya finally sighed. “I’ll come home when I finish this bit. Then you can take Psyche on his shopping spree, and when you come home I’ll go back to work. Okay?”

“That’s fine. See you,” Shizuo responded, actually happy to avoid argument as he hung up the phone and headed back in to eat his breakfast.

The next day was Tsugaru’s birthday, and true to form the apartment they lived in had been decorated to reflect the occasion. Banners and streamers had been put up by a convocation of both adults and the children to make sure that the day was, indeed, special. Because each one of the six children was a blessing in and of themselves, even if that never seemed to be reflected upon too much except on their special day each year.

Friends had gathered for the party that evening, Shinra, Celty, and Tom-san, as well as their uncle and aunts. The presents had piled high (as Izaya loved nothing more to spoil his children rotten when he got the chance), and the blue eyes glittered when Tsugaru was finally allowed to open the presents. There were countless interesting little presents, and bigger ones. He had received more than any eleven year old could possibly want. The pile slowly dwindled until there were only a couple of presents left.

Finally, the last present was left on the table. The box was small enough to be innocent, and it was bright pink in its color. Tsugaru picked it up, examining it curiously as he tried to figure out exactly what might be in the box that he had left for last.

“That’s from me! That’s from me!” Psyche bounced up and down proudly as Tsugaru started to undo the ribbon on the top of the present. Tsugaru offered Psyche a smile as he took the lid off. His eyes widened as he saw the contents of the small box. Inside was a pair of blue-tinted sunglasses that were pretty much identical to the one’s that his father was currently wearing tucked into the collar of his shirt. The smile that resulted was possibly the biggest smile that Tsugaru had ever granted such a large audience to see.

“Daddy helped me get them so they looked exactly like his!” Psyche chirped, still bouncing next to the blonde as he took them out and placed them gingerly on.

“Thank you Psyche,” Tsugaru said, still beaming. “They’re perfect.”

And the blonde continued to wear them every day, just like his father.
