Life Happens

Talk about neglected. I haven't written here in months--10 to be exact. What have I been doing? I used to update all the time. It felt so good to update the world and get my thoughts out--even if some were very trivial, as they are if you read my early entries. So the question remains...what HAVE I been doing?

May: I chaperoned the prom at school, which was great fun. I also chaperoned the senior trip to Maine, to discover two things about myself: I love white water rafting, and there is a MIRACLE drug that prevents car sickness. It's this little patch that you put behind your ear, and it CURES YOU. I was able to ride on a school bus for seven hours, facing backwards and reading. It was magical. Also, I turned 24 and had a joint birthday party in study hall with Molly, who is the 17-year-old daughter of Bonnie, a woman I work with. Also, my grandfather's funeral was on the first of the month, which was hard.

June: School ended. I signed my contract to return as study hall monitor at South Royalton in the fall, and I attended graduation to say goodbye to the seniors and my colleagues for the summer. Then I began camp, after a two-day summer vacation. That all seems like a blur to me now.

July: More camp. I really can't remember any specifics from this month, other than I attended the 3rd of July festivities at the State House like I do every year. It's one of those traditions that I absolutely love.

August: Big changes this month. Bonnie informed me that a job had opened up in the guidance office as an administrative assistant, so on a whim, I applied for it. A few days later, I had an interview scheduled, and within 24 hours of interviewing, I was offered the job. Camp ended on a high note, and I started immediately at the school as Administrative Assistant to the Director of Guidance, a job which I love. I work with students in scheduling, college applications, VSAC, transcripts, records, grades, as well as normal administrative assistant functions. It's great.

September: I held auditions for "Alice in Wonderland," which I was sure was going to be a smash. I did attract a large number of people at auditions, but so many people ended up dropping out, that I was left with a cast of 17 students and one faculty member. Everything worked out for the best, however.

October: I found an apartment on West Cobble Hill Road, and I moved out of my mom's house and into my apartment at the end of this month. It is such a nice change, and I love my apartment. The only downsides are that money is really tight, and I am an awful cook. No matter how hard I try. I get by, though.

November: Alice in Wonderland went off with a few hitches, but it was a big success and we made a lot of the money back that we had spent on the show. We came within a few hundred dollars of breaking even (if you don't count my salary)! We were attacked by swine flu, however, and during the performances, we cut parts and had unprepared understudies, as well as little beds made up backstage for people falling over. I even acted for a night! It was a rush. Very rewarding though.

December: Is it bad that I don't even remember December? My cousin came home for Christmas, and I was able to spend some time with her, which was nice, but other than that, this month was a blur. Goodbye, 2009. Oh, and I gave up getting drunk. Not drinking--just getting drunk. My wallet and my liver love me for this.

January: I rang in 2010 with Meghan and Elizabeth and a Battlestar Galactica marathon. Nice and low key like I wanted. College deadlines approached and passed at work, and I made some new friends and severed ties with others. The universe was in a strange place at the beginning of the year. I feel like it hasn't completely righted itself yet.

And that brings us to today. I'm on vacation this week, and bored out of my mind, which is probably the reason that I'm sitting here putting my thoughts down. When I return to school, I'll be holding auditions for Sundown Alley, which will be the first play for students in grades 4-8 ever at South Royalton School. I really want to be directing the high school spring musical, but I figure I'll just bide my time waiting for that job to open up. I'm thinking about going to grad school, or at least taking online courses in Psychology and Counseling in order to get peer reviewed in to be a guidance counselor. I just have to find the money. It might have to be all loans. And it will be a long while before it all pays off.

So that's where I'm at. Where are you?

life, drama club, apartment, friends, soro
