“Careful! The Lanterns steal what you forget!”
From the 23rd to the 29th there will be an addition to the city and to Central Park from sunset to sunrise every evening. The Lantern Circus and its ‘thieves.’ In essence, this is a circus made up of the memories that people have long since pushed aside or forgotten completely. Ghosts, the lantern players, put on masks and perform these memories in tents, giving them names and acting them out like plays for the recently departed.
Every evening at sunset dozens of small men cloaked in black and carrying
large lanterns will be wandering around the city, speaking to no one and causing no trouble. When they pass people they ‘steal’ their forgotten memories and take them to the circus where the plays are performed. They can be followed there, but they will ignore any attempts to interact with them or stop them. They are, in essence, ghosts.
The circus itself is much, much larger than it should be, given the space containing it. Tents as far as the eye can see, some gigantic, some quite small. Big ones contain ‘group’ memories…where people left their keys, the one missing sock, 9th grade algebra…and the small tents (though huge on the inside) are individual to a person. The last time someone sang them a bedtime song, the first time they were disappointed in something special, the first person to let them down, a first kiss…memories people have forgotten or obscured, accidentally or deliberately.
The Circus is run by a taller skeleton in a human mask, and will direct people to various tents at his amusement or their request, as long as he doesn’t think it will spoil the show. Ghosts are picky. They also will ignore living people entirely, they cannot see the living. An exception is the actors. If someone breaks the play up by remembering, the actors can talk to them as they disappear. For a moment. In-Character.
Anyone can come and view the play, can watch that persons memories just as easily as they would a television show or a play. HOWEVER, if the person who’s memories they are finds the tent, the actors disappear, the audience cries out, that play is gone for good and the person remembers. In flashes at first, but it will all come back rather quickly.
And then, at the end of the week, as soon as sunrise hits on the 30th, the circus will vanish.
Ooc stuff:
In essence this is a giant excuse for finding old memories and creating CR. People can write up a little quick ‘story’ of one of their memories (or more than one!) and other people can find the circus and watch them. Each memory would have its own tent and name. At least until that person sees their own show. This can be played out or handwaved, however people see fit.
What I’m thinking is that people can use this post to set up who is going to see their memories, make arrangements and such, maybe post their memory if they like. The memory-plays will not be closed to any audience though. Anyone, from an innocent child to the evilest of men, can come and see it until it is gone at the end of the week or once the person sees it themselves.
Oh, and they can be broadcast on the network, if you are so cruel. BUT if the owner sees them, they will remember, and the play will vanish just as it would have were they there.
That's it. I think. Questions? This is my first attempt to run a plot here so let me know if I'm doing it wrong. :D
EDIT: The mods agreed, so! This can be used to recover memories lost in the old death-penalty for characters that have been here a long time.
