Sarah was finishing the orders on a table in the corner when the familiar looking man came back into the diner. Well, well, well, would wonders never cease. She saw the other waitress on duty head to his table, but Sarah waved at her and shook her head.

Sarah'd take that table.

Swinging by the coffee station for the pot, she headed to the table and poured him a glass.

"Fancy meeting you here. Come to pay me back for last time?"

He gave his tight little smile. "You could say that. I figured I didn't tip well enough then." He wrapped his hands around the coffee and felt it warming them. "How've you been?"

"Same old. The vampire Nazis managed to steer clear of this place."

She pulled out the order pad and a pen by, feel, her eyes never leaving Jack. Despite the smile, she still feels he's dangerous and she doesn't like to take her eyes off dangerous people.

"You?"

"They hit the police station pretty hard," he said. "I got knocked out when the first missile detonated and spent the rest of the night unconscious. I think I'll have a sandwich. Roast beef." He sipped his coffee, pretending not to notice Sarah's eyes on him. He knew some people were capable of recognizing what kind of person he was. He was used to it.

"Police station? Didn't know you were a cop."

She tried not to sound too surprised. Or disappointed.

"Fries or chips with that?"

"Yeah, I joined after the bioterror attack," Jack said. "It's hard to stay retired when things like that are happening around you. Chips, please."

"Good for you, then." Her tone had gotten slightly neutral, friendly, but... lacking. Cops were to be avoided if at all possible - one of the earliest lessons she'd taught John. One she'd tried to live by here.

"I'll get this order in and be back with the chips and some water."

"Great, thanks." He noticed the subtle shift in her tone, and wondered what triggered it, and, not for the first time, what kind of life protecting her family Sarah had experienced, for a waitress to give off the same signals as a war veteran. Maybe she's just ex-military, he thought, although his intuition told him otherwise.

As Sarah went off, Jack looked around, appearing casual, but evaluating how much privacy the booth had. In case they needed to talk about anything confidential.

A minute or two later, Sarah returned with a basket of chips and a large glass of water. She set them both on the table and asked off-hand.

"So, got a job - take it you found a place to live, too."

He nodded and dug into the chips. "Yeah, a little apartment in a place called Hell Towers. The top two floors are owned by ImPorts. The people are a little strange, but I trust the man who gave me the lead, and it's worked out well so far." Jack paused to sip his coffee before speaking in a low voice. "Sarah, do you know where this place gets its bread? Or its flour, if you do the baking here."

Her eyebrows rose a little and she paused before answering.

"Off the top of my head, no. Why do you ask?"

She had a pretty good idea why, she might not pay as much attention to the Network as some, but she'd seen the posts post-zombie day.

Still speaking softly, Jack sipped his coffee while looking nonchalant for the benefit of any observers. "The Scourge are increasing their activity, and their leader escaped during the nuclear crisis. They've attacked by poisoning food supplies before."

Sarah tapped her pen on the table a few times. "I haven't heard anything, but I can ask around. See where things came from."

"Just a precaution," Jack nodded, then ate another chip while looking thoughtful. "Do you have any contacts you could use?" He had the feeling Sarah might have some connections, useful ones, especially in his line of work.

She pauses before sitting down across from him. "What's in it for me? You're asking a lot, you know - for a cop."

"I think we all have a shared interest in preventing the Scourge from launching anymore attacks," Jack said, thinking of the rotting horrors in the streets from only a few weeks ago. "And I'm not asking this as a cop." He paused, then leaned forward. "Look, I only joined the force because I thought that's where I could do the most good. To protect people. That's my priority, beyond upholding the law." He locked his eyes with hers, completely in earnest. "So if you think you can help me, I want you to know I'm not afraid of doing what it takes to get the job done. That includes dirty hands and bending rules."
