Julia's death made him realize that most things people did -- the fighting, the grudges -- simply weren't worth it. This time, it was Jay who died, but it was different. Jay's own death made him realize the things that were worth it. There was someone else now, someone who was as different from Julia as the moon was different from the sun, who made him see all the things he wanted. He wanted to get better. He wanted to live.

Of course, those were things he would never have at home, he knew that now. But in the City...

It had taken Jay two weeks of sitting alone in his room to realize that, sitting alone in his room wasn't, in fact, living.

So when he returned to classes at the Institute, unlike when he initially started attending the school on his own world, it was of his own will. But two weeks ago may as well have been an entirely different lifetime ago, and it certainly didn't help that Jay was so behind on schoolwork that trying to follow the lectures was near impossible. Eventually, Jay gave up, and simply spent the majority of his classes staring out a window, nodding at the appropriate times, and, if someone asked how we was doing, shrugged off the question. He learned well enough after Julia died: nobody wanted to hear that you were miserable, or that everything you struggled for was for nothing.

It was a relief when Jay's final class ended. He'd pretended that he was okay for so long -- ever since Julia died. But this...

This was almost too much.
