Between two jobs, school, and patrolling, Tom can scarcely keep his eyes open. He's stretched thin as a plucked thread, just barely covering all of his bases. He knows he's not at his best---Bucky'd told him as much at the breakfast table when he'd informed him he looked like shit---but even his sub-par was better than what most of these fellas on the street could dish out. He hovers above the skyscrapers in a long stream of glowing red, pausing when he hears a scuffle below.

Aw, hang. Another fight. These folks just couldn't get their fill of fighting.

The first one only needs a good punch in the face for him to want to run away, probably mostly blinded by the fact his nose is broken and the pain has to be spreading into the eyes. He's going to have two black eyes tomorrow for sure.

It makes three of the others hesitate, and the two left pull out knives. Because knives are going to be useful, of course. Idiots ( ... )

He hovers over the fight, sizing up what's happening and who's going to come out on top. This is an old habit, something he had ingrained in him even before he got dropped headlong into the war. It's an important thing to be able to do---to look at a scuffle and know the outcome before the last blow's been struck. Back in the circus---and before that, when he'd just been another gum-chewing kid who wormed the hell out of going to school regularly---you had to know if a straggler was going to best your pal or start shit in a crowd.

He can tell even from this distance that the boy in costume has a stiff lip on him and an even stiffer right hook. He's good, and he's fast, and he's handing those fellas their own faces so quick it's almost embarrassing. He's fighting angry, slipping his way out of being hit back ( ... )

The light catches the side of his peripheral vision before he gets grabbed on and held in the air by the cape. Now that's an idea, pulling someone by his cape, because that won't choke anyone or be dangerous ( ... )
