Mrs Coulter was rather enjoying life. She was rich, she had a satisfying job and she enjoyed the same kind of luxury she had when she lived in London. Her penthouse apartment was in the wealthiest part of the City and she had decorated it in much the same vein as her old home: very pretty, with gold-striped wallpaper and plump cushions and lamps casting soft light over the living room.
She was relaxing on the sofa with a cup of chocolatl and a book to read. Her golden monkey daemon half-dozed beside her, complacent for once. Neither of them had anything to be wary of.
