No, no, that was bullshit compared to this. This was really fucking important.
To say they'd fallen into his trap was... in part, putting it lightly. It would have been damn surprising had they not warned her that A was a horrible human being upon seeing him on the list. But at that point, taking him off would... well, give them away, wouldn't it? It had been perfect. Nothing she said or did indicated that she knew A was a danger, eliminating the fear of her simply turning him down based on some cock-and-bull excuse. On the other hand, the chance of her checking out his credibility was laughably low. Naive, gullible, sweet, and eager to do well, she wasn't a threat in the least. As it was, he'd even ensured that she didn't think to check with the others while they were available to her, right then and there, without the need for her to go out of her way to find out what one might assume as useless fact-checking. Signing up significantly later had ensured this.
Not to mention, he came off so simply and trustworthy-- why shouldn't she not even bother to ask questions?
At that point he'd been fully aware of the fact the second the list went up, A quite literally headlining the bottom, at least one person would be eager to inform her of their wonderfully biased opinions of him. At that point, however, it was too late.
Knowing he would be there, L was likely to send some form of reinforcement-- no, not just that. He'd likely be watching.
To L, he'd claimed he was from before his death. Currently 24 in his true form, he shifted back, looking much more like he was 19 or even 20 now, bright disarming smile on his face, dress shirt and die complimenting the typical dress slacks. They weren't uncommon-- no, like this, L would be able to recognize him in a heartbeat.
His old friend back. His best friend. His only friend.
Dare he say it? Just as planned.
If Light was being honest with himself, lacking a death note had him severely compromised and-- given the chance to genuinely work with L to fix this place (that was so rotten his fingers twitched) would be something he'd legitimately consider, all sans heart attacks and other forced deaths.
Without the death note, working with L was the least he could do; the two greatest minds together? Legitimately working together, instead of secretly working against each other in turn? the potential was terrifying. The things they could accomplish, together--

For now, strolling inside the coffee shop, he quickly looked around. Quite a few people he recognized, including Amelia and Richard as well, who didn't know him in his own body at all, but Raye Penber's. If he hadn't already intended to use the full alias, Asahi, he would have reconsidered at this point.
