Despite the weirdness of the past few days, Stein found himself in the mood to make something sweet. This was a mission, of course, that required sugar--and Stein couldn't find any in his kitchen.
So he set out with a measuring cup in his hand and an unlit cigarette between his lips to partake of that time-honored tradition of bothering one's neighbors for a cup of sugar. And Stein was just tenacious enough to knock on every door--not just on his floor, but in the whole building.
