Jaime found her way to the Xavier Institute, almost expecting the place to look like a military compound and was pleasantly surprised to see its rather stately academic edifice rise before her.

She wasn't really sure what to think about this place, this opportunity. On one hand, it frightened her, well this whole City did, really--the idea that teens were taught so young to fight, and use these unusual abilities. But then, that wasn't really different from a lot of things in her own world. Children had to fight for their lives all the time in the 'real world'; was it best they had a place to go to, to be together?

She wanted to work with kids--and almost wondered that if this was really the true purpose of her being here, not why she was literally brought here but perhaps in terms of destiny. She wasn't a mutant but she certainly knew what it was like to feel out of place and different and unable to control one's own "special abilities" (she still had a habit of accidentally smashing furniture when she was upset). She knew how she felt when the government wanted to keep her locked up in a safe place when she didn't want to work for them any more, how trapped she still felt by that situation--and she guessed, if there was a whole world of "mutants," how various agencies would want to use them like that as well. She could be in position as both a teacher and as an agent to be able to help these kids in a way few others could. But would that mean her work as a teacher at last, however much she dreaded it, crossed over the line into her life as a bionic operative? Even if she taught nothing but English and Math, she imagined getting involved in a place like this would mean possible danger.

There was one thing she was certain of: she needed more information. She needed to meet with these people, get a sense of them, what they wanted, what the kids they taught meant to them.

She stepped into the school, rubbed a hand nervously through her hair, and rapped lightly at the door to the headmaster's office.
