It's a bloody sight different from back home, and Jono's trying to deal with the massive amount of culture shock at the same time as believing (with a faith very blind, he has to admit) that back in those awful pits his friends are frozen on the precipice of being slaughtered: nothing he can do will halt it, and in fact, the moment he comes back to help, the forces of Apocalypse will come down like a hammer. And he'll be the agent.
It all makes for broodiness, and Jono's not inclined to leave the Institute for the next while.
