...Do you ever speak in full sentences?

Constantly. Simply omit needless words. Saves time. Never found it a barrier to communication.

You only need to do that if you have anything interesting to say.

'Interesting' subjective concept, dependent on listener's response to message. Always have important things to say.

Care to explain what you are?

heal_or_execute June 23 2011, 22:19:38 UTC
Of course. Curiosity natural when encountering new species. Species known as Salarian, warm-blooded, descended from amphibians. Homeworld is planet Sur'Kesh.

... Warm-blooded amphibian descendents. Organics never cease to amaze. What system is your planet located in?

[Information not revealed by canon yet] system, Milky Way galaxy. Curious: reference to 'organics,' distinctly electronic-sounding voice. I wonder- synthetic being?

You know, I thought I'd never believe in aliens, much less see them here. Out of this mindless, damned and crooked world, indeed.

[ A considerate pause. ] Unless that term―alien―is, uh. Xenophobic to your types. Sorry.

[Mordin smiles]

Apology unnecessary. 'Alien' very common term in galactic culture. Appreciate the consideration though. Display of unusual sensitivity for first contact.

Suppose you are another recent arrival, being unfamiliar with extraterrestials.

[ It takes him a while to respond, because that blinking, man. Weirds him out. ]

'Fraid so. Got shipped here a couple of days ago, still feeling a little bit shell-shocked. Mostly blame it on when I came from, not where I am now.

Still. Must be tough to be landlocked, if you're "galactic." You got my twelve sorts of sympathies.

[Blink blink look at those amphibian lids Grant. Sliding back and forth across those featureless black bulging eyes.]

Shocked reaction to be expected. Enormous transition, from mundane life to unwilling interdimensional transport. Implications require time to sink in, before adapting to new situation. Understandable.

Sympathies appreciated. To be honest, hadn't stopped to realize implications of being stranded on Earth. Initial impulse upon arrival investigating surroundings, examining Porter. Used to casual interstellar travel. Idea of there being nowhere else to go- no Salarian worlds, no other species- unsettling. Spending long period of time here... will require adjustment.

[She would like to be of service to this strange creature, because helping is what Mother does best, but...]

I--I am afraid I do not understand a number of your words.

Apologies. Professor, scientist, used to speaking in technical terms. Often leads lead to confusion with non-experts. Can clarify if you like.

Thank you. That would be very kind of you.

What is a -- [And here she pauses to try to recall how he pronounced the unfamiliar terms.] -- 'quantum'? What is a 'sub-atomic'? Are these new inventions as well?

Reply

heal_or_execute June 25 2011, 00:59:29 UTC
Not quite. Sub-atomic: refers to very small scale of studying matter, parts too small to be seen unaided. Quantum: describes interactions and energies involved between smallest particles of matter. Not new inventions. New discoveries. Already present in how the universe functions. Just a matter of recognition, discovery.

[Have a thoughtful stare.

If he can help a true alien, he'll be honoring the ideals Jomy and Blue have passed on to him, won't he? But...that raises the question of how to help.]

Trying to blow it up doesn't work.

The 'Porter.

Thought as much. Porter would not have remained operational this long if direct approach an option. Still, good to know for sure. Thank you.

[Surprised pause. He got thanked by the alien!]

You are...excited to be here.

Excited, yes. Fascinating situation, need to study, investigate. Not pleased though. Perfectly content with current work in own universe. Important missions, enjoyable company, saving galaxy. Not happy with abduction.
