This is absolutely preposterous!

To think anyone would have the nerve to kidnap me, Glinda the Good, vindicator of all things good and just in the Land of Oz, from my very own bedroom, and take me to this positively dreary kingdom, which I have never as much as heard of -- unbelievable! Simply mind-boggling, is what it is. And all that for the ( Read more... )

[Elphaba's communicator is floating idly by her side, and she lets it play through the most recent messages. She pores over the Grimmerie, barely listening to the tinny noise it makes, but finds herself frozen, all of a sudden. Very calmly, she closes the spell book, and gets to her feet. Removing her hat, she drags one hand through her hair, and breathes out heavily, through her nose]

[shooting a glance at the communicator, she quite forcefully throws her hat against the floor, and begins stomping on it. There may or may not be a great deal of shrieking and screaming involved. Anyone living in the MAC will likely hear the distinctive noise of a Witch thwacking her broom against the frame of a door over and over again]

[that done, Elphaba sits back down-against the floor, this time. Without her prompting (not her concious prompting, at least) the communicator plays the message for a second time, and Elphaba pays attention to each word. That done, she realises that she has no idea how to respond]

[she recognizes that voice. how couldn't she? it's only been a little over a month since she last heard it, after all. the thing is, though, that Glinda wasn't expecting to hear it again. wasn't supposed to hear it again, except for, perhaps, inside of her head ( ... )

Come now, Glinda. I refuse to believe that even you are so very self-absorbed that you don't recognise the sound of my voice. Don't waste time on questions you know the answers to well enough.

[there is a very long pause and then a crash as Glinda, quite possibly, throws her communicator to the ground -- as though that would fix whatever malfunction, whether it is in the small machine itself or truly in Glinda's head, that caused it to emit that all too familiar, all too exasperating voice -- and then picks it back up]

[there is yet another pause before she speaks again]

How?

It is a city, there is no ruler, and you can't leave.

It is a city, yes, but what kingdom is it part of? How could there possibly be no ruler? And if I successfully arrived here, surely there must be a way to go back, as well?

It is part of the United States, I do not believe that their government has much to do with it though. You may return if you are ported home but there is no way by choice to go back, I tried.

The United States? Never have I heard of such a place.

What ways have you tried? And this -- "porter", how does it decide who gets sent back and when? Is it fueled by magic?

This is the City. There's a teleporter here that pulls people here, specifically to be heroes, but if what I've heard is true, it doesn't necessarily select the most capable for the job.

There isn't any way to leave, either, except to get ported out.

"The city"? You make it sound as though there's only one. Or is this one of some notable significance, perhaps?

And how would one get "ported out"?

As far as anyone can figure out, it's just called the City. There are other cities here, and this one seems to pretty much be New York City, but as far as I know it hasn't ever been called anything but the City.

I don't know. The porter just decides to, whether you want to or not. I'd rather not, so I haven't bothered learning much about it.

People say "New York" as if it were some sort of valuable information, but that name carries absolutely no meaning to me. Would you be as kind as to explain?

I get the distinct feeling that this is not a dream.

[mostly to herself, although her voice is no quieter] At last, a suitable reaction.

[her tone is peaceful and reassuring now, like when she talks to her fellow citizens back in Oz; there is also just a tad of satisfaction apparent in it] No, it is not a dream. It is indeed I, and while the current situation is far from ideal, it is reality, as well -- one that I'm certain can be dealt with.
