Virgin Islands Travelog #8
Hawksnest Beach, St. John USVI - Fri, 26 Dec 2019, 10am
Today is our last day on tiny St. John island in the US Virgin Islands. We have to be out of our vacation rental by 11am but we figured that leaves us ample time in the morning for one last hurrah at the beach. After all, I've been up before 6 the past few days anyway. Well, today I slept in 'til 8... and the weather was gloomy... but even so we figured we could do more than
sit on the porch (as nice as that is). There was still plenty of time for a quick beach trip.
We drove 2.5 miles out to Hawksnest Beach. It's a nice white-sand beach with parking really close by. And it's free because it's part of Virgin Islands National Park. And it's Hawks nest. C'mon, we have to go there.
Wednesday afternoon this beach was crowded and the parking lot was virtually full. Today, as we ventured out mid-morning under uncertain weather, we had a huge swath of it to ourselves.
We alternated between wading in the gentle surf and sitting back in beach chairs. ...Well, I alternated between wading and sitting. Hawk practically had to be pried out of the water.
This Bucket's Not For Sand
While in the water we talked about Number 51. You see, this park is Number 50. The 50th national park we've been to out of (currently) 62. We already have plans for the next one. We're planning to visit Acadia National Park, in Maine, next May in conjunction with a trip out to the northeastern US when two of our friends are getting married.
