Update: new picture included

After driving all around the island yesterday (previous 3 blogs) today has been a quieter day. Or at least it has since 4am, when our bed broke. I managed to put it back together in the middle of the night, though the mattress still sags on both sides- a separate problem. We went a little too cheap on this vacation rental. I wasn't able to get back to sleep after that. I tossed and turned 'til first light around 6 then got up to sit on the porch.

The porch is the one nice thing about this vacation rental. It's got a hammock-chair that Hawk really likes (it's good for her back) and the roof is deep enough that it's pleasant to sit outside when there's rain- which we've had a decent amount of today!

I was feeling sick to my stomach in the morning so I stayed in 'til almost noon. The sky was gray and threatening rain all morning, anyway, so I didn't feel like I was missing much. But then when we packed up the beach chairs and canvas bags to go beach hopping today, the rain began to fall. We toughed it out for a bit while it was light, but soon the rain got heavier so we headed back to base.

We weren't the only ones who thought, "Let's enjoy the porch in the rain." When we got back to base one of the neighborhood peacocks was already taking advantage of it.

After our impromptu photo session (the peacock gave up when he realized we weren't going to let him have it to himself) Hawk enjoyed the porch swing for the afternoon while I took a nap to make up for the sleep I didn't get last night.

Now we're both back out on the porch after dinner, enjoying the slightly cooler evening air. The typical weather here in USVI is 83-85° F (approx. 29° C) during the day, cooling down to about 75° F (24° C) overnight. That's not really a wide range of temperatures, and the rain doesn't make it cooler- it just makes it more humid afterward.

Tomorrow's our last day on St. John. We're thinking about getting up early in the morning, visiting a drive-to beach a few miles away, and getting back here in time to check out by 11am. Then it's back on the ferry over to St. Thomas, where we're staying until Jan 1.

being sick sucks, taking it easy, life's a beach, vacation rentals, birds!, virgin islands
