Wow. It's been a busy conference. Here it is Friday (as I write) and I'm still catching up on what happened Tuesday. Well, my
moment of calm before the storm (previous blog) passed and I headed back over to the conference hall- dressed in full regalia as Jenkins the Butler.
The conference this year is in San Francisco's Moscone Center instead of the Marriott Marquis hotel. We're getting bigger! But that also means walking outdoors, on the street, between the hotel and the conference center.
Walking down the street dressed as the butler seemed odd as an idea but I immediately made it part of my act. San Francisco being what it is I actually didn't get many strange looks! The only interaction I had along the way was with the hotel doorman- a professional dressed in a tuxedo and bowtie. He smiled when he saw me and said he remembers me from last year. I remember him to. We enjoyed a chuckled together before I turned and headed down the busy afternoon sidewalk.
At the convention center I'd arranged with my friend and colleague, Angel, to meet me at the door for pictures. I asked Angel because he's quite the maven for snapping pictures here and posting them on social media.
Attention was minimal as I arrived at the convention. I made a show of going to the registration desk. The folks there got a laugh out of it. I asked if they could make me a badge with my name as "JENKINS/the Butler". They said they couldn't. But as I went upstairs nobody challenged me for a badge. "I guess I can let you in," the security guard said with a chuckle. I had my own badge in my pocket just in case.
As I landed upstairs a few people stopped me to ask for pictures there. I happily obliged. But most people were headed into the opening keynote presentation so there's where I went next.
Inside the darkened room for the keynote a DJ was laying some beats as the crowd filed in. I walked over to the DJ's deck and "butler bombed" him
similar to what I did last year. The DJ loved it, of course, and queued up some spoken-word tracks about Jenkins while the camera operator put a video of us together up on the big screen. I'll have to see if I can find some social media pics of that.
