The Big(ger) One Hits California

St. Simon's Island, GA - Sat, 6 Jul 2019, 9:30am

I awoke this morning to news that a significant earthquake struck California. No, not the 6.9 earthquake that struck on Thursday- even though that's significant enough that it's still in the news- but an even bigger, magnitude 7.1 quake Friday evening at 8:21pm local time.

Example news articles:I didn't feel it, of course, because I'm 2000+ miles away on the far side of the country. But the quake centered in Ridgecrest, CA, was felt across southern California and into neighboring states.

Ridgecrest is a small town, pop. c. 29,000, in the desert near Death Valley. There isn't much around there- which is a good thing in this case because it means the number of people's homes damaged by the quake was small. For perspective, this quake is the biggest in California in 20+ years. It is bigger than the 1994 Northridge Earthquake (wikipedia link), a 6.7 quake, which struck near Los Angeles and killed 57 people and caused tens of billions of dollars of damage.
