I saw Avatar-3D tonight. Wow.
I'm no movie professional, but I predict that this movie is going to sweep the Oscars for all technical categories. The CGI effects are astounding. The interactions of the characters with the environment is incredible and the detail on the faces of the motion-captured leads bring them to life. The music is probably the best James Horner has ever done - the musical instruments lift the visuals perfectly. The sound editing is immense; the feelings of the animals, machines and arrows buzzing by your head is amazing. But how all of these aspects tie together to make Pandora (the world where this movie takes place) so real and captivating does nothing short of hypnotize you for the time you're there.
The film was fascinating, interesting, entertaining and emotional. The story is original yet predictable. I would say it's a combination of Dancing with Wolves, Pocohantas, The Lord of the Rings and Halo. How does that even work out, right? What's important is that the story gets you involved, offers memorable and likable characters to root for (and some to root against).
A character in the movie says that Pandora became his real world. My advice to you: let Pandora become YOUR real world for two and a half hours (plus), let it make you completely forget about your life and problems, let it entertain you, move you, let it carry you away. That's exactly what it did for me. (Which, by the way, was EXACTLY what I needed.)
Avatar makes T2 look like child's play. James Cameron completely delivered (again!)
I give it a 8 out of 10.
