IRON MAN 3 GAVE ME A LOT OF FEELINGS

First off: I really enjoyed this. Like, it wasn't perfect? But it was a thing I liked and am going to ramble on about.

The twist everyone told me was coming was GREAT. That was the best possible way to use Ben Kingsley and the Mandarin character. I get why some canon sticklers are disappointed, except I don't, because The Mandarin is a vicious old, racist trope that deserved exactly what it got. (And finally, finally, some actual thought from the franchise about how it portrays the Middle East and the USA's relationship to it!)

I liked Don Cheadle as Rhodey a lot better in this film than in the last one. I get how they could actually be friends, I think? But man, that polo shirts has got to go. If Rhodey were a real person I wouldn't care at all because his body his clothes, but he is fictional so I'm going to put it out there: LESS POLO SHIRTS PLEASE.

Having read the Extremis comic arc, I was not super impressed with this Maya Hansen, who was nothing but a shallow plot device. A REALLY REALLY REALLY HOT SHALLOW PLOT DEVICE. Like, seriously, fishpatrol was very good to put up with
littlemousling and I about it, but Maya can and should have been so much more. Fandom, please write lots of fix-its! Also, really good, lovingly detailed oral sex between Maya and Pepper. kthx.

The post-credits scene <3 That actually satisfied something a bit visceral? Whatever, science bros for fucking life. (I dig that Bruce is bad at people. I REALLY DIG THAT.)

It's a little bit weird that no one even mentioned SHIELD. Like, AIM can find him but Nick Fury and the team are totally MIA? It's a bit weird and continues to be the biggest plothole in the MCU (followed closely by Iron Man's recruitment to the Avengers instead of War Machine). Because yes, Tony Stark is a stubborn enough asshole not to bother calling in help, but that won't stop any of the characters we came to know and love in The Avengers. Although rumour has it that Fury's having another busy week?

Unsurprisingly I don't love the unreflexive nature of the way disability was used in this piece (both Tony's "not"-PTSD and physical disability). I also would have loved the little boy companion a whole lot more if he'd been a little girl and/or of colour. Tony Stark with kids is still pretty great!

The storylines around the Tony/Pepper relationship were interesting, but I can't help but hope that this is not the norm for them. He's making all the right apologies and of course a relationship between them was never going to be all easy all the time, but it can't always be Tony fucking up and apologizing, rinse and repeat, no matter how sincere, appropriate, and good the apology. Sort of interesting to see it hinted at that Pepper would prefer he give up the suits. Basically, it's interesting to see that fandom seems to have mostly gotten this one right. Well, minus all of the polyamory, but if canon gave us ALL of the shiny things, we'd have nothing to fanwork about.

(Speaking of the suits, I'll be someone had a BALL digging up old comics designs to draw on for inspiration for that scene. Overall A++ use - or lack of - of all of them in this movie.)

I'M GLAD JARVIS AND DUMMY ARE OR ARE GOING TO BE OKAY. THANK YOU FOR NOT ABANDONING DUMMY, TONY.

As a closing note, anyone got a copy of the footage that seems to only be airing in China? I'd love to see a little bit more about Tony's surgery; I suspect it ties together the rest of the "Why now and not sooner?" question pretty neatly.
