They told her about Furuichi almost as an afterthought. At first she didn't believe their words. It was almost too absurd to think about. But then she remembered Furuichi's actions and his state of mind as he had confronted Akiyuki. It wasn't impossible.
Haru covered her mouth, choking back the feeling of the bile in her throat. She wondered belatedly how things had managed to come to this point. Closing her eyes, she composed herself before quietly asking the commander for permission to return to her room.
As she was about to leave the room, the commander's voice washed over her. A chill ran down her spine as the full weight of his words became clear. "I would watch your back Nishimura. Wouldn't want anything to happen to you next."
