Musings from the outside...

Just got done watching the big CBC election special before your big day tomorrow and, if you friendly folks don't mind, weigh in a little. I'd like to believe that I've acquired a reasonable idea of politics in Canada, and figured I'd offer some random outside analysis of what I've seen and read so far. Things will probably get sillier as you go ( Read more... )

Damn, you really seem to have your finger on the pulse of Canadian politics.

A couple of points:

I must agree with manitoblog about voting NDP being a vote for the conservatives. It is only in so far in that it is not a vote for the Liberals, which strengthens the Conservative position. But I hate it when leaders don't do what they're supposed to to earn my vote, and then try to tell me I should vote for them anyway to keep people I don't like out of power. It's insulting. Al Gore did lose the election all by himself by not being himself. He didn't even win his own state!!
By doing what? Completely ignoring the very popular record of the administration he was involved in. Sound familiar?

And yes, Jean Chrietien would have run a much better campaign and not allowed the liberals to be tarred and feathered like Martin has. I don't know if you've heard the analogy about Martin and Chretien piloting a plane. The theory goes that if a plane hit turbulence and Chretien was the pilot, he would get on the speaker and say "folks, we've just got a bit of turbulence here but it's no big deal. Just sit tight and we'll get through this before long." In the same situation, Paul Martin would get on the speaker and say "Oh my God, this is the worst turbulence ever! I'm just stunned by how bad the turbulence is! Don't worry everyone, I promise I will figure out what is causing this turbulence!" The man knew how to play the game.

Thanks for tuning in!

Paul Martin: "Let me be clear, I will get to the bottom of this turbulence. This turbulence is a very, very fundamental issue. It's obvious that this turbulence hates Canada, and anyone who supports this turbulence hates Canada. If you're, uh, not a passenger on my plane, you're not Canadian. Sure, we, we, we took money from the 'engine' budget and put it, it, it into the 'my pocket' budget, but at least my plane isn't like that turbulence out there, trying to force me to make our airline better. Oh, and don't vote for the jet stream either, it's too erratic."
