This is just an excerpt from a random chapter.......I'm not writing this chronologically. My boys being jerks to each other... <3

This was supposed to be the day they completed their wilderness survival test. Could he possibly have forgotten? Tetsuru sat fidgeting on his cot, trying not to worry and failing. Taske and he were supposed to meet half an hour ago to report at the base near the edge of the forest, and begin their monthlong test.

The young man glanced again at the door and got up to make sure, for the fifth time, that he had packed everything he thought they would need. Then he paced the small room some more. As another ten minutes passed, he sat back down with a huff.

Tetsuru asked most everyone he could think of who might know Taske’s current whereabouts. Finally, he was directed to Lessa’s bunker, having been told she might know where the son-of-a-bitch was hiding.

As he opened the heavy wooden door with a quiet squeak, the sound of heavy breaths became more defined until it became obvious that someone, or rather two someones, were enjoying some intercourse in the next room. He opened the door completely to find Taske and Lessa in a compromising position on the floor of the little bunker. Lessa noticed him first and stared at him with wide brown eyes before giving Taske a shove and covering herself with a blanket.

“What is it…?” Taske breathed, damp brown hair falling into his eyes, then turned to look in the direction that Lessa was staring. The look of mixed surprise and guilt on his face was almost comical.

Tetsuru gave him the iciest glare he could produce, then turned and silently left the room.

When they set out to complete the test a day late, Tetsuru would not look at Taske, and Taske’s pride would not allow him to apologize. When they were told they could bring nothing but their respective army knives and the clothes on their backs, Tetsuru’s jaw tightened. They were told they would have to make their own shelter, find their own food, and if they were alive and un-injured at the end of the month, they would pass the test. They were to march straight until the sun set, camp for the night, then continue on in the morning.

They would be the only two human beings around for dozens of miles. For a month.

Tetsuru strode more quickly than usual, meaning Taske had to almost trot to keep up. Taske wanted to say something, anything, to break this silence. He knew that Tetsuru could and would ignore him for a month, even if there was no one else to speak to. In the back of his thoughts, he knew he should articulate some form of regret for his callousness, but it would be a lie. And while he could lie convincingly to most anyone, and Tetsuru would probably believe him, it was a matter of pride that he never lied to his best friend. Also, saying he was sorry that Tetsuru was being a dramatic emo-bitch, which was what Taske really felt was the problem, would probably not go over well.

“Come on, man. Don’t do this to me.” Taske whined, trotting after the taller man. Tetsuru just gritted his teeth and stared ahead.

That night, they slept on beds made from soft, damp soil and leaves, with only each other for warmth. Yesterday’s rain had made starting a fire difficult, especially for two tired young men.

Tetsuru huddled on his side, back to Taske, and shivered. He lay cold, miserable, and brooding, on the verge of exhausted tears, until he felt Taske worm his way over, mumbling in his sleep, and wrap his warm arms around Tetsuru’s waist. When he nuzzled the back of Tetsuru’s neck with a contented sigh, Tetsuru opened his eyes and wallowed in heartache, knowing it was Taske’s empathy reaching out in his sleep. He shut his eyes again and let himself dream of the beautiful relationship he wanted but could never have.

Tetsuru vaguely recalled being warm, comfortable, and in the midst of a happy dream before he was shocked awake by the feeling of being suddenly drenched in cold water. Taske awoke next to him with a startled yelp and they both scrambled to their feet and stumbled to the nearest cedar tree to get out of the pouring rain.

Tetsuru sat at the base of the tree and hugged himself, shivering violently. Taske sighed and plopped down next to him, putting an arm around his shoulders to help him warm up,

“Maybe if you gained a little weight, you wouldn’t get cold so easily.” He joked.

“Fuck you.” Tetsuru mumbled, leaning on him.

taske, tetsuru
