I made these while I was bored the other day. I'd think that only people who have met a lot of serious klezmer fans would get these, but then again some of my relatives on facebook seemed to find them funny for whatever reason.
I had a heck of a time figuring out what picture to use for these macros. I tried looking up variations on "klezmer hipster" "mincing violinist" "clarinet hipster" "jewish hipster" "Sweater klezmer" (in the hopes of finding someone in a sweater vest playing clarinet??). Then I tried some different angles and found some admittedly unusual pictures of Hasidim in shiny clothes. However, I thought it was unfair and tasteless to mock the ultra-religious for the vanity-crimes of the secular artists ;)
To be honest, most klezmer revivalists already kind of look like hipster in their old photos--thick-rimmed glasses, nerdy faces, ugly shirts, etc.--but I wouldn't want to feel like I was parodying a single person, I'd be liable to be frozen out of dinner conversation at the next klezkanada I go to!
Finally, in an attempt to find some classic, foppish looking jewish gangster from back in the day (since most old klezmorim were too stern-looking to be dandies), I came across this weird painting of two famous british gangsters who aren't Jewish (although they have some Jewish and Gypsy ancestry according to some people on wikipedia). Somehow, the arrogance and distortion seemed to fit. So, there you have it!
