What the hell, I had an $86 credit at this crappy stereo parts store on Bank Street and decided to look through their records. It turns out they had like 30 used Ukrainian-Canadian records! The store is not remotely owned by Ukrainians, someone just sold a load of them sometime.

The problem is to figure out which have accordion or other instruments in them, which rule and are crazy hoedown music, and which are gloomy choirs of 30 baritone men (which sucks). I haven't listened yet, but hopefully some of the ones I picked end up being decent..
(the italicized quotes are from song descriptions)

The Semchuk Sisters "Ranging in ages 9 to 16, the Semchuk Sisters are a pleasure to the Ukrainian Culture, since it is almost impossible to find a family of four girls who can present talent of this nature." Including "Sadness in the Valley" and "The Going Away Soldier" (not to be confused with "Song of a Soldier Going to War."

Songs and Dance of the Ukraine The cover has a giant grainy picture of a guy with a Mongolian-style goatee and single ponytail of hair holding a Bandura. "Do not shine, bright moon, for anyone but my beloved when he walks home. But should he fall in love with another girl then, dear moon, hide behind the clouds. The moon, indeed, hides behind the clouds and the heartbroken girl weeps bitterly."

MONITOR presents GEORGE BOHACHEVSKY, baritone, & Instrumental Ensemble Conducted by GLEB YELLIN "...he flirts with the blonde but he leaves the red-head strictly alone. Not every blossom blooms and not everyone who is in love marries." "..In despair he wanders off to distant lands."

KOLOMEYKA and other Ukrainian folk dances Not much writing on the back, but most songs are listed as "Transcarpathian Folk Dance."

ПІСНЯ ЧАРІВНИЦЯ (Enchanting Song) "Music is Heard"

Songs from the Carpathians "Hey, in the High Mountain Valley"

УКРАИНСКАЯ МУЗЬІКА = UKRAINIAN MUSIC, Nikolai Kondratyuk Sings This one has the most insane and beautiful cover. A bar of orange, a weird 60s wallpaper of fruits and flowers, and royal blue bar underneath. "Don't afflict me, Mother." "I don't know myself."

untitled record which has the promise of "accordions" after some songs.

BANDURIST MALE CHORIS QUINTET On the cover, there is a woman with a bit of a beehive and pointy red leather shoes peeking out from her long skirt, confidently holding an accordion in front of some burly men. "This humorous folk song is about the woes of a man, having been spurned by a beautiful woman, decides to drown himself. But the water is too cold."

UKRAINIAN COMIC SINGS This cover is insane. It is made of cardboard that looks like cheap darkwood paneling. A solid gold sticker on one side bears the black letters. "These songs and spot comedy bits were composed and sung by the very talented Eugene Zukowsky. From 1925 to 1940, through the depression and years of struggle, Zukowsky made the Ukrainian people laugh...for Zukowsky had a way of reaching common ground among Ukrainian people and making everyday drudgery a humorous thing. Featuring "No, not horse!" "I drink and sleep by myself," "False tears," "Half truth," etc.

UKRAINIAN DANCE PARTY Now we're talking with the cover, 2/3 solid poppy red and 1/3 dark sky blue, with a huge picture of a man leaning on the upwards-pointing keys of his accordion. Especially good because it promises "Expectation Waltz", one of the first songs I learned on accordion.

ОЙ ЛЮБОВ Song of Love Typewritten back cover. "I SHALL WEAR MY BOOTS." "MY SORROW." "A GUELDER-ROSE IS NOT A WILLOW."

I left about the same number behind. All else I got is one Hungarian record they have. I don't know if it's classical, folk, pop, etc. It's called Karinthy Frigyes UTAZÁS A KORPONYÁM KÖRÜL Gatefold record, some sepia photos of various dudes. Who knows..

I want to date a rocker..is that bad? No specific rocker yet.
