home and away

I just watched the cutest movie from the library, A Passage to Ottawa! Who knew there was ever a good movie filmed in Ottawa? Yet my twin says that lots of Indian movies are filmed in Ottawa, but they pretend it's a "generic American city." However I don't think this is Indian, according to IMDB the director Gaurav Seth is "Indian-born, Russian-trained, Canadian resident."

So cute..

Also, for you Canadiana buffs, I saw this book pass through the library the other day and ordered it for myself. When I came back today, it was there, and I took it out. It looks good! "East European immigrants to Toronto in the early fifties dreamed of the good life in the suburbs. But they did not have any money, so they put up an outhouse, dug a pit in a new subdivision, threw a roof over the hole, and lived among the lawns and gardens of their neighbors [...] These thirteen linked stories do for the DP's of Weston what Mordecai Richler's novels did for the Jews of St-Urbain street -- they highlight the comedy and the poignancy of the struggle to succeed."

Finally, my work gave me this book that no one has taken out since 2001. But why? It's so pretty and interesting!

Shiny gold cover..ecological message!
